Glamis Dunes - South Side

Glamis Photos - Spring Break 2000

Like the North Side, the South Side of the Algodones Dunes is a place of immense beauty. Here, however, the general public can explore to the deepest depth of the dunes, with permits at $10 per week or $30 per year. Currently, all forms of transportation are permitted. Over the past 40 years, the South Side has been the locus of heavy visitation, and hundreds of thousands of people have had the pleasure of personally experiencing the Dunes.

The heavy ecological footprint left by the visitors is worrisome to environmentalists. However, no better educational tool exists than a personal visit to the Dunes. That intense interest exists is beyond doubt. The area is truly world famous -- the Glamis area on the PHOTOSPORT website receives more than 100,000 visits a month from around the world. Further, of the 50+ categories, "Glamis" is always in the top four most popular here, even out of season.

With its current restrictions, the North Side is useless as an educational tool. While understandably so -- a wilderness should remain untouched -- to call it an educational tool is a joke. It is the South Side that serves that purpose. For every visitor to the North Side, 500 or more visit the South Side.
