The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) begins its inaugural season in 2001 with eight teams: Atlanta, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Carolina, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego and Washington DC.

The league's teams are founded on a core of past and present US National Team members. All of the stars from the victorious 1999 Women's World Cup team are playing, as well as all of the newer members. Distributed equally among the teams are founding members Michelle Akers, Brandi Chastain, Tracy Ducar, Lorrie Fair, Joy Fawcett, Danielle Fotopoulos, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Shannon MacMillan, Tiffeny Milbrett, Carla Overbeck, Cindy Parlow, Christie Pearce, Tiffany Roberts, Briana Scurry, Kate Sobrero, Tisha Venturini, Saskia Webber and Sara Whalen.

Teams have also obtained the best of international players including the Chinese, Australian, Brazilian, Norwegian and Nigerian teams.
