Spring Break 2002

Spring Break 2002 (2nd Weekend)

Law Enforcement Overkill

A season-long law-enforcement sweep has had the desired effect -- crowds at Spring Break were down 75 percent from last year. It was the smallest crowd for a holiday weekend in 18 years. After the hassles at New Years and President's Day, it seems the bulk of the desert riders are choosing to do something else on big weekends. Looking at the thin crowds at Glamis' hotspots, one could only wonder what will happen if this continues? What will happen to all the new personnel hired for crowd management, now that there are no crowds any more? What is going to happen to all the new equipment the BLM has purchased? In the one-sided battle against the drunken duner, the BLM has assembled too big a force and is in danger of killing off the whole thing.
